Smart Phones

Most of us have a smartphone. Out of convenience or necessity, they have become a near “must-have” in today’s high tech world;  not only are they a means to communicate with others in a multitude of ways, but they contain a fairly sophisticated camera, a voice and video recorder, a diary, a shopping list, a reminder, a stopwatch, and a music player, among many other useful functions, according to the apps we have downloaded onto them. Yes (within reason!), there really is an app for everything!

BUT – There is also a downside. There are inherent dangers, not only with the phones themselves but also with what we are increasingly expected, even pressured to use them for.

Let’s first look at the phones themselves…

Or rather the technology they use to enable us to send and receive information via the cellular network, as well as the Internet.

The Cellular Phone Network

This is made up of a network of antennas, generally attached to purpose-built towers, but also attached to office buildings, schools, churches, banks, tall buildings, grain elevators, water towers, and retirement homes. Basically, cellphone antennas are to be found on any strategic building (or piece of land) whose owners are willing to accept payment from the telecommunication companies concerned, while remaining, in the main, blissfully unaware of the potential harm they can and do cause to the inhabitants of said buildings, as well as nearby homes or places of work, education, or worship.

The cellphone network, like the rest of today’s telecommunications technology, has evolved over time. At the present moment looking back, we see five generations of wireless technology, beginning with 1G (first generation telecommunication, or wireless / mobile communications). 1G was introduced in the 1980s and was voice transmission only. Then came 2G, second generation wireless in the 1990s, that brought the ability to also text. In 2003, third generation (3G) incorporated the first two with the ability to be on the Internet. Fourth generation, or 4G, folded in the ability to stream video with the above. 5G, fifth generation wireless brings the capacity of increased speed for downloads. Basically, 5G is all the above, but faster.

We have gone from cellular service that transmits in kbps (kilobits per second – 1G) to cell service that transmits in the millimeter wave frequency range (approximately 30 – 300 GHz), at orders of magnitude higher than 1G, or for that matter, 4G. Hence, the current and controversial 5G “fifth generation wireless” has many people stirred up,  5G never having been safety tested on humans by the companies selling it.

Ironically, the same millimeter waves being used (and postulated) for 5th generation wireless have been not only tested but used by the military, in a technology called the “Active Denial System.” This system is meant to be a non-lethal way of dispersing crowds, by creating, at a distance, the sensation that one’s skin is on fire.

Most slightly older phones nowadays connect to the 3G and 4G antennas, but the latest model phones connect to both 4G and 5G, as the older gens (1G, 2G) are phased out of use. Each generation has provided better reliability and faster communication than its predecessor, with 5G alleged to be capable of downloading a major Hollywood movie to a smartphone in a matter of seconds (at least in theory!).

Of course, each successive generation has had its pros and cons. On the one hand (and as mentioned) faster, more reliable voice communications with better coverage. Plus the ability to text, browse the Internet, and stream and watch videos, whereas the earlier iterations could not perform all these functions. However, each generational upgrade has brought an increase in both the frequencies being broadcast as well as the increased need for energy to power them, with an accompanying increase in antennas and cell towers worldwide, resulting in increased potential and actual harm to biological life, both fauna and flora, including pollinating insects, and now it is believed, soil microorganisms. If radio frequencies in use for decades are causing the above, what must it be doing to us humans, with 5G millimeter waves being potentially the most harmful of these technologies as far as we know?!!!

For a more in-depth look at 5G please click here, but suffice to say, 5G is a totally different animal than its predecessors. In a nutshell, as each generation has incorporated a broader (and higher) range of microwave (carrier wave) frequencies, the potential for harm has also increased across the board.

Why are cellular phone networks and smartphones so harmful?

Modern smartphones provide us with probably the most dangerous technology available today. Every smartphone broadcasts on a number of different levels. Here they are, beginning with the most harmful:

Your provider’s cellular network

This is covered above and allows your phone to make voice calls, send texts, browse the Internet, send emails, play games, and download apps, movies, pdf documents, and more, as long as you are within range of your network’s antenna. It can be turned off on your phone by putting it into “airplane” or “flight mode” or by switching the phone off completely. Some report that switching your phone off completely does not fully turn off its capacity to send and receive a signal. This can be measured by a (rf) radio frequency detection meter as shown at this link.

Wi-Fi

This is how your computer, and also your phone, connects to the Internet, via a local router, such as in your home, some retail stores, government buildings, or in a coffee shop, among others. It has a range of more than fifty feet depending on the power of the router. Connecting your smartphone to the Internet via in-house WiFi will allow you to do much of the above, including making voice calls, etc, if your provider allows it, and the speed of the local router you connect to. It can be turned off, again, by putting the phone into airplane or flight mode, or by switching the phone off completely, however, if required it can be turned back on separately to your cell phone network when the phone is on.

Bluetooth

This communication technology is very local (meaning short range) and is used to connect your phone to a nearby printer, or other small device, such as a smart watch, or a wearable blood glucose sensor. Bluetooth is also to be found as a feature in many later model cars, if not all new vehicles, at this stage of the game. Bluetooth is supposed to have a range of up to thirty feet, although we have never experienced this range ourselves. It can be turned off by putting the phone into airplane or flight mode or by switching the phone off completely; however, it can be turned back on separately as with Wi-Fi, above.

NFC

NFC stands for Near Field Communication and has a range of only one to two inches. This is the technology used by your smartphone when you use it to pay at a store checkout. NFC is on all the time when the phone is switched on and will go off when the phone is completely off. It cannot be turned off by putting the phone into airplane or flight mode.

GPS

This is a radio navigation system that uses satellites to determine the phone’s location. It is mainly used to determine your location when viewing a map on your phone and give directions to your destination. GPS uses microwaves and so must also be considered in the mix of what is and is not safe on your phone. As long as the phone is powered on, the GPS is functioning; at this link you will find instructions for switching off GPS if you want to be as “broadcast free” and safe from irradiation as possible. But as with all things “smart” it is best for you, presumably a human being, to stay on top of your choice of settings, as urban legend has it that some settings on your phone may turn themselves back on when you least expect it, and others say GPS (and/or other functions of the phone that can locate or listen in on your conversations) have been known to be active, even when a smartphone is turned completely off. But, who are we to say that “someone” (maybe even someone in a Chinese manufacturing facility) might be interested in where you go and what you do?!!!

The long and the short of it is, if you want to receive in real time, incoming calls and texts you would have to have your phone on all the time, and as you can see, keeping the phone in airplane or flight mode does not completely solve the problem of being irradiated by your hand held communication device with its close range microwave/radio frequencies, although it helps.

When a smartphone is kept close to the body, all of the above will cause some degree of harm over the long term, even the NFC feature.

How can smartphone harm be mitigated?

1) Turn your phone completely off when not needed.

2) Keep your phone in airplane or flight mode.

3) Keep your phone as far away from your body as possible, to avoid unnecessary/dangerous RF irradiation.

4) NEVER hold your phone right up to your ear when speaking (this is even included in the phone’s warnings altho most people never read it).

5) NEVER wear a live phone in your bra, or in your pants pocket if you value your fertility, or the health of your breasts, among other organs. Where do you want YOUR tumor?

6) ALWAYS (wherever possible) choose the speakerphone function.

7) Text instead of call.

8) Figure out how to use the phone hard-wired with an ethernet cable to connect it to the Internet when at home. It can be done.

9) Don’t leave a phone on your nightstand at night, especially if it is on. If you must have a smart or cell phone nearby overnight, make sure to place it at least 10 feet from where you sleep. Distance is always your friend.

10)  NEVER sleep with a powered on mobile device under your pillow. Make sure your kids are not using cellular phones or tablets in this manner (if your kids even have phones, so many do, and tablets in so many schools; this is a questionable practice for undeveloped skulls and bodies that are far more vulnerable to RF than adult physiologies).

11)  Keep broadcasting cellular equipment away from children if you are able! Limit tweens/teens’ use. Live cellular devices should be kept away from small children and pregnant women alike!

12) Go lo-tech altogether and ditch your phone (yes, we know, a huge challenge!). Do a digital fast!!!!

13) Help is available to mitigate the harmful effects of your phone by clicking here.

14) Last, but absolutely not least – NEVER allow yourself to become so immersed in your phone that having a phone comes at the expense of/becomes a detriment to your relationships with your children, family, friends and pets. (We see this, sadly, all the time….)

What else could our smartphones be used for?

Like all technologies, there is a good and a bad side, largely dependent on the choices of those using it. Yet independent of personal choice is Big Tech, and its collaboration with governmental forces seeking to enforce certain choices against the will, or even the knowledge, of the people. While smartphones can already be used for inappropriate and illegal purposes, there will be a time, if it is not with us already, when third parties (mainly large corporations and governmental organizations) will co-opt our smartphones’ functionalities for their own coercive purposes, mainly to achieve greater control over us, the citizenry, and over consumers. Money talks! And we live in an age of captured agencies (one in particular, credibly written of here)! These purposes may include increased data mining, surveillance, enforcing on the population a cashless society with a central bank-issued digital currency, digital IDs, social credit scores, vaccine passports, and the limiting of our movements, a literal individual carbon footprint, all in the name of curbing climate change, health and safety, maintaining law and order, to name a few, and leading to higher profits for the few, and greater taxation of the many. It is at least four years since Professor Shoshana Zuboff warned us of what she termed “surveillance capitalism” and it seems to now be a phenomenon on steroids, even beyond our wildest dreams as a free people living in a so-called free society.

All of the above will take a toll on our privacy and freedom, all for our own good (of course!) and the major technology that will enable this future (we’d rather not see) will be the ubiquitous smartphone, connected to the harmful 5G cellphone network, as well as harmful wireless smart meters controlling and surveilling our energy use, cameras watching us everywhere we go, all connected into the Internet of Things and more, where all that is electric-powered is also connected, and all of this supposedly enabled by the so-called electrification of our cities with “smart” grids and cities, which no doubt will be managed by AI, and not by humans. All conveniently powered by (a yet to be revealed, you say?) clean, non-polluting, renewable, and sustainable energy source. (Yes, we hear you when you say “but what about solar, what about wind, what about, what about…….!???”) Please read Katie Singer on the many downsides and unintended consequences of so-called “green” energy sources,  here, and here.

What could possibly go wrong?

(A number of dystopian sci-fi movies come to mind.)

Welcome to a brave new utopia!

NOT!!
