Cell Phone Towers

Cell Phone Towers

Up until now cell phone towers have remained fairly unchanged since their appearance in the 1980s, although you may have noticed an increasing number of antennas being attached to them, particularly in recent years. These antennas can also be seen attached to strategically located buildings, such as office and apartment blocks, schools, churches, and retirement homes. In fact, you will see antennas mostly on buildings whose owners see an easy way to accept payment from the telecommunication companies for the use of their properties, often being unaware of the potential harm they can cause.

Cell phone towers, along with their accompanying antennas, are a vital part of the cell phone network enabling us to communicate with each other and browse the Internet with our smartphones, and, as with smartphones, the microwave frequencies they emit can cause harm to surrounding fauna and flora, including to ourselves.

You can read about the dangers of microwave frequencies here.

Cell phone towers often carry antennas from several different carriers, so if you are within good range of one you should get a strong signal, however, the further away you are, or if you are in an enclosed space, like a vehicle (although it can be a good thing in one sense as the harmful effects of the external antennas are diminished), on the other hand, if your phone is switched on, it will have to work harder to connect with the cell tower to get a signal causing an uptick in your hand or car, of more ir/radiation, as your phone seeks to make that connection.

As mentioned, cell phone towers have remained relatively unchanged until recently, that is. In the past they have carried antennas that, first, broadcast 1G (first generation) leading up to and through today’s 3G and 4G (third and fourth generation) cellular networks, but now, many towers also broadcast the very latest in 5G networks. Although 5G is the “new generation on the block,” this particular technology varies according to the carrier, meaning that although some 5G antennas can look the same as existing 3G and 4G antennas, others can look completely different, and may not be familiar to you at all.

On this page, we include some photos of different types and “styles” of cell phone towers, including a few of the more unfamiliar 5G antennas.
