About Longmont4SafeTech

Who Are We?

Longmont4SafeTech is a group of Longmont residents and others, all with a shared interest in the well-being of Longmont, Colorado, and the world, who have become awake to the dangers and risks of proliferating and ubiquitous wireless technology. While we recognize that technology has a place in all our lives and that we have indeed become a technologically based society, for better or worse, we have become unwilling to have this same technology rule our lives at the expense and risk to our health, our relationships, our environment, and all living things.

Why Did We Create This Website?

This site is long overdue. The tipping point of its creation is: Longmont is set for a major, city-wide rollout of wireless, microwave broadcasting “smart” meters. Some of us decided it was way past time to have an Internet presence where we can make our views known, attract like-minded others, and create more community and advocacy around the topic of safe technology. If in some way, large or small, we are able to influence others to a) become well-educated on this topic and b) join us on this journey, then perhaps we have a chance at altering not only this city’s trajectory (that we feel is incorrect for Longmont for the many reasons you will find on this site, in particular, wireless technology’s many risks) but stand as an example for other places facing similar challenges to do the same.

What Is Safe Technology?

We live in an advanced and continually advancing technological age. By technology, we are speaking specifically of those things that belong in the electric and electronic category, such as computers with all their variations, electrical infrastructure including electrical grids and smart meters, sub-stations and power lines, telecommunications, and all manner of wireless equipment, cell towers, smart/cell/DECT phones, wireless routers, and laptops, the equipment we use daily as tools of basic living.

When we say “safe” technology we are referring to (in the case of wireless technology) devices that in one way or another, have been “defanged” of their potential to cause (microwave) injury to biological life, including humans. In the case of smart meters, this might look like fighting to keep our old electro-mechanical (wired) analog meters or placing some kind of shielding around a device if/where/when installed, or find mitigation for the dirty electricity (DE) engendered by a smart or digital opt-out meter. With WiFi in the home, at basic minimum it would mean turning off the WiFi overnight, when you sleep; better still, getting hard-wired and/or figuring out how to employ ethernet cable for your computing needs or, again, creating/purchasing some kind of shielding in the home. In the case of living close to high-tension wires or an electrical substation, this could mean selling your house and moving rather than risking leukemia. In the case of a 5G tower in your front yard, this would mean fighting in any (legal) way possible for your and your family’s life and health! (In an even broader sense, advocating for safe technology might look something like you might find at this excellent site!)

Why Do We Need Safe Technology?

Our existing wireless technologies have been driven by unscrupulous corporate industries far more interested in making profits than they are in health and the environment, or telling the truth, and by captured agencies no longer acting in the public interest. Safer alternatives exist, it’s just that entrenched, monied interests have little to no interest in them. The above-mentioned (especially wireless) technologies have been shown to cause harm to biological entities, both in research studies and a mountain of science performed in relatively recent years, and from countless personal anecdotal experiences, but this is being ignored from the federal level right down to our local city government.

Why Is This Such a Pressing Issue?

With direction from the Longmont City Council, and advised by the Climate Action Task Force called forth by the City in response to a declared climate emergency, our local municipal power company, Longmont Power and Communications (LPC) is on the cusp of rolling out 50,000 wireless smart meters in the City of Longmont. In the past four years both residents and non-residents alike have spoken up in favor of the Precautionary Principle. We have repeatedly presented the City Council as well as Longmont’s Sustainability Advisory Board not only the real science on toxic EMF (versus the outdated science and safety opinion presented at an Oct. 2022 City Council Study Session in the “health effects” section, around minute 44 moving forward, by someone without qualifications to comment on EMF and health outcomes) but updates over three years on the antiquated FCC radio frequency guidelines and subsequent lawsuit and ruling, expert/s’ opinions on the flaws and risks of this technology, and actual live experts to study sessions with the City. All of our offerings aimed at drawing attention as to why making smart meters the ‘#1 top priority of the city to get to renewable energy by 2030’ is a flawed decision. Alas, in spite of the many efforts made by so many in bringing the City expertise on a broad scale, the City was apparently not listening or paying close attention, or perhaps simply not doing the actual required homework of becoming impeccably well educated on this topic. We admit, it is a complex topic, and people (City Council and other staff) lead busy lives. Then again, so do those of us bringing the City our concerns and objections.

Are We A Bunch of Neo-Luddites?

Not at all. Almost everyone we know loves (even to the point of addiction!) their wireless devices with all of the benefits they offer. We are not anti-tech, we are pro-SAFE tech! Unfortunately, most people never realize that by the constant use of their wireless devices, they are contributing to the continued growth of wireless everywhere in our world, yes, even in the most remote of places. The microwave frequency carrier waves are invisible, you can’t see or taste them (although some people can feel and hear them, and it’s NOT good), yet they pose significant risks and dangers. We are simply in favor of safe alternatives, especially where smart meters are concerned (and you don’t have a choice to turn it off), and for the safer use of all wireless technology, including cell phones and Wi-Fi. It is our desire to educate people on the problems with wireless tech, and how to mitigate its dangers, as it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.
